Music of the 1950’s-1970’s
By: Lisa Grosjean

I am going to start with the music of the 1950’s. There were three kinds types of music that were popular in the 1950’s those were rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and jazz. I am going to write about rock and roll and blues.

Rock and roll’s most known artist was Elvis Presley he combined different genres of music to make his own. His energy on stage made teen’s love rock even more. Rock soon filled radio broadcasts all around America.
Blues or soul music also emerged in the 1950’s. A famous performer was Ray Charles. He was a singer, pianist, and composer. His music was respected and enjoyable.

Next, there were many types of music in the 1960’s, but lets just talk about two, soul music and Motown.
Soul music was a combination of black rhythm and blues. One performer was Ray Charles, like Elvis he combined different types of music to make his own. Soul was emotional and was vocally intense with a rock beat.
Motown included many soul artists and became a powerhouse for black music. It usually included two or more background singers as well as a lead singer. One artist was Diana Ross and the Supremes. She is a well-known singer and sang many songs that are still popular today.

Lastly we come to the music of the 1970’s. This includes Rock and roll, which had become very popular. Musicians experimented with mixing in orchestral sounds more at this time. There were a lot of new types of music in the seventies but I am going to talk about disco and punk rock.
People looking for something to dance to would pick disco. They loved the funky and throbbing beat of this music found in dance clubs. Disco also came with a fashion style and dance steps. Like Afro’s and tight pants. Punk rock was created because people were “getting tired of” rock and roll. This kind of music was considered rude and was blamed for teen rebellion. It was also known for body piercing’s, Mohawks, and weird color hairstyles.

The music of the fifties-seventies is not a lot different from what teen’s listen to today. Even if some of them don’t want to admit it our music is a lot like our parents mus
